My name is Rex Williams(Tex), I was honored to make the 1985-86 cruise. I was an AO2,associated
with VA-55. It was one of the greatest times of my life, I will never forget some of the events that happened on that cruise. On that cruise we had 2 F-18's crash,1 helicopter crash, collided with a tanker, and of course the conflict with Kadafi. We did lose a Marine Pilot, may he rest in peace, he had flown one of the F-18's that were never recovered. Thank you Bob for giving us a way to stay in touch.

My dad(Teddy Joe Hamilton) served aboard the Coral Sea during the early 1960's as an 2nd class Petty officer/Aircraft electrician. He was aboard the Coral Sea on the Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea for which the ship was named. The ship pulled
nto Sydney Harbour in Australia, on the 20th anniversary.
My dad met my mom (she was Australian citizen) when the ship pulled into the harbor. My parents wrote back and forth for several years and were married in 1964. So If it hadn't been for a battle fought 20 years before and the USS Coral Sea, you might say
wouldn't have been born..
Isn't it interesting how things work out.

you no doubt had to work under and the difficulty
the Navy had in supplying us off Vietnam. I especially remember the fresh baked cinnamon rolls someone in our group obtained almost on a
regular basis each evening. It was a bag full and we foundered ourselves on them. As we said

I only served on the CORAL SEA for a year and it was the next to last year of her active life, but being from the SAN FRANCISCO bay area I grew up seeing her berthed at ALAMEDA NAS. I was in the Sea Scouts in the early 80's and we would haul are boat out a
the station for bottom cleaning. Sailors from the CORAL SEA and the Destroyer CARPENTER would help us out and then give us tours of their ships. It was then that I knew I wanted to serve on a carrier. Although she was not in the greatest condition at the
time I served she was still a grand old lady and I am gratefull to have had the oppertunity to walk her decks into history.

Hi guy,s it,s me again.Just wanted to let you know
that after i wrote yesterdays message i spent a few hours trying to locate the e-mail address for
the secretary of the navy. After about 4 hours i gave up but i just wrote to my congressman to have him point me in the right direction to try to
have another aircraft carrier named after our coral maru.It may be a crap shoot but hey i,ll try anything once.Perhaps if some of you out there
write your congressmen we might be onto something.
would'nt it be great to see a shiny new Coral Sea
get commisioned at Newport News?I mean you could never replace "OUR" Coral Sea But it sure would be great to see another chapter get started in her
history.C-mon guys lets give it a try.

Hi guy,s.Just need to vent a little bit here.I
mean the u.s.s.Oriskany has been decommisioned
for about 25 years and was only recently sold for
scrap to an outfit in Texas. How come Coral Sea's
fate was decided so quickly while the other got
to sit for 25 years??I do'nt know,I guess i just sort of feel a little bit as though our ship was
always treated like the"ugly duckling"and was scrapped just so they didnt have to look at her.
Does anyone else feel the same or is it just me?
Also is there a possibility of starting to lobby
to possibly get another CV named after her(and not
a lousy LPD either)? If so I feel it should be looked into, but i dont know where to start.Does anyone agree with me?????? Thanks shipmates i just
needed to get that off my chest......T.Barry(MMFN)

Ahoy there mates. I served abroad the USS Coral Sea CVA 43 from 1964 - 1966 Was on the West Pac cruse. In Hawaii our evaporators went down had to say there for 30 days. Then own to Sidney Australia. BUT !! we were call to arms. Went to Philippines to load
up on bombs, ammo and stores. After we got under way the Capt. told us where we were headed. The gulf of Tonken South China Sea. to do battle with North Vietnam. Man I was only 20 , never heard of that spot on the globe.
For liberty We went to Olongapo Philippines ( Subic Bay ) Hong Kong, Guam, And two cities in Japan Sasobo and Youkuska. In Guam when heading home we got the bad news we had to return for a few more months. That was heart break for sure.
Does any one remember the collision with the USS Iwo Jima in San Diego, How about the un rep with an oil tanker and the hoses got lose and the oiler looked like a Texas oil well. That poor ship had oil all over her deck and bulk heads. Also how about the
liberty in Subic Bay when the shore patrol had to call in the Marines using fixed bannets to stop the fighting among the sailors all trying to get back on board because it was late and we only hand a few liberty launches to get every on back to the ship.
hat a night ha ha.

I served aboard the Coral Sea from late 77 to Nov 81. I remember many of the sea stories. I was in s-1 division . One thing I do remember clearly was the incident with the russian cruiser during the standdown. The skipper did have one thing to say. he sai
" Isnt it great to be Americans" I'm not sure I've ever felt such pride as that moment. One incident I remember was a fire in the medical department While we were in Bremerton. It was the snow ball fight with the yardbirds with a empty dry dock between us
that I wish I had filmed. I really appreciate this site. I'm glad to know someone is as fond of the old boat as I am . THANK YOU

I was on the Coral Sea when she was recomissioned in the early '60s. What a wonderful experience. I sure had to learn fast. I was a young Engisn from Stanford assisgned to the A division as Asst. Division Officer. My Division OFficer borrowed my car o
e night, with the Presbyterian minister's daughter with him, hit a tree, broke his neck. He lived, but was medically discharged. The Engineering Officer looked me and muttered something that I was to be the Division Officer. What did I know? Nothing.
I did know enough to rally my four chiefs around me in my stateroom and said if they would protect me, tell me the words to say, we would get along fine. They did. And we did!!
I belong to the Coral Sea Association.

Served on the Coral Maru from 2/62-10/64. Remember sitting on the pier in Yokosuka watching her come in (getting ready to report aboard) and she collided with the cruiser St. Paul. As I recall, a couple of guys got killed, damage to both ships. Remember l
sing elevator on that cruise, remember her running aground in San Francisco bay, remember '63 cruise and being initiated as a "Golden Shellback" on the way to Sydney, remember entering the Bering Sea on the way back, lots of other things. Oh yeah, I remem
er Puckett jumping ship somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. I can honestly say that I am extremely proud of having served on her. Watching her getting chopped in Baltimore was very hard to take, as I drove by each day on the way to work. Have a piece
f metal from under one of the catapults that was given to me by Seawitch Salvage.

Great site that brings back a lot of memories. I was aboard for the 63 & 65 West Pac cruises as an AQF2 in VF154. Miss the days of being underway in deep blue water, used to love to sit on the sponson off the port side of the hangar deck and just watch
he water come off the bow and the flying fish riding the air currents above the bow wave.

I was aboard the grand lady during the dry-dock period in Bremerton, Washington in '78, and during the '79-'80 WestPac cruise attached to the Marine Detachment. It was sad to learn that she was decomissioned and put to the torch, and to view the pictures
of the salvage operation. If anyone knows how to obtain a piece of her e-mail me the information. Thanks
