Comments: I repost this message, the one I wrote on Sept. 11 2001 because I\'m still surprised how right it turned out to be. After 22 years employed by the DoD, Dept. of the Navy, I\'ve accepted a position with the US Army COrps of Engineers and have just finished my first 6 months out of 49 in Afghanistan. 9/11 is the whole reason I am here rebuilding the infrastructure of this country. I have a true passion for what I do here and why.

Aboard Coral Sea, in 1986 we bombed Libya and that began my career fighting terrorism. Here in Afghanistan I shall end my DoD career doing the same thing.

Here is my Deck Log entry from six years ago:

Sept.11, 2001.....nothing will ever be the same. Nothing. Ever again. Today, after 16 years, I returned to USS Coral Sea. Back to March of 1986. Libian terrorism had finally reached the point that Ronald Reagan decided to pull the trigger. During our Med cruise, we had been at GQ twice a day, and Capt. Fergeson came over the 1MC and told us the next time it was called away, it was gonna be the real thing. And it was.

What took place today has reinforced in my mind many things. What has become the fate of the ship we served on is but a grim reminder that the United States has grown complacent in its overblown opinion of itself. This is still a dangerous world in which we live. Like the ideas in Washington of our elected officials who seem to believe that we no longer need to arm our military and defend the borders of America and lend help to our allies, the people of this country had better wake up to the fact that TODAY...they need to sit their children down and explain what has happened. That is, if they themselves can understand it.

Today had damn well better open some eyes. You...you that think for a second that what goes on in the global arena doesn\'t effect you unless it disturbs that \

Comments: Hard to believe that September makes 53 years ago i joined the Navy.Where did the time go? I remember the first day i reported for duty. The ship was tied up at pier 7 in Norfork. I looked up and saw these guys painting the stack. I thought to myself you got to be nuts to hang from a chair up there. I was assigned to the 7th division which at that time was boatsman and gunners mates.I was temporary put in the deck division and guess what my first job was? You guessed it. I was painting the 43 on the stack. The numbers looked good from the ground, but close up it was pretty shaky. Man was i happy when the reassigned me to the gunnery dept.
Hey guys, remember to fly your flag on Tuesday, September 11th. Let us not forget.

Comments: Hello to all you rotorheads – a.k.a. helicopter squadron members, who deployed on Coral Sea. My wife and I went to San Diego last week and toured the U.S.S. Midway. It is located near the intersection of Broadway and Harbor Boulevard in downtown San Diego.

On the flight deck were a Kaman SH-2 and Sikorsky SH-3. The SH-3 was the type my squadron flew when I was in HC-1 det 6 on my two 1972 and 1973 cruises on Coral Sea.

Most all the aircraft exhibits were closed, but the SH-3 cargo door was opened, so I climbed in. The cockpit area was sealed off with Plexiglas, but the cargo area was open to wander around. The only thing missing was the smell of leaking hydraulic fluid.

We toured the recently opened air boss command center, the navigation room, and the bridge. Laid out on the table in the navigation room was a navigation chart of Subic Bay. The chart clearly showed NAS Cubi Point and the Subic Bay main side where the Coral Sea often docked.

I was surprised how different the Midway was from Coral Sea. The first thing I noticed was the hangar deck layout was different. On the Coral Sea, our H-3 helicopters were always parked forward on the hangar deck. On the Midway, the forward part of the hangar deck has low ceilings, too low in fact to park any aircraft. Maybe it was a parking area for Ground Support Equipment (GSE).

The second thing I noticed was the mess deck was laid out differently. I remember the enlisted dining area on the Coral Sea was in one large room. On the Midway, the dining area was scattered in numerous smaller rooms.

The third thing I noticed was the berthing spaces were different. On my first cruise on Coral Sea, HC-1’s berthing compartment was accessed by climbing down a ladder near the ship’s post office. When on Midway, I found the post office, but the passageways were laid out differently. Also, our bunks were just pieces of canvas laced to aluminum frames. On Midway, the crew slept in the newer modular bunks.

The fourth thing I noticed was that Midway had a “porch” connected aft of the island to hold a 3-D radar. I don’t remember a “porch” on Coral Sea.

The parking on the Midway pier is limited and fills up fast. Parking is $10 all day, and admission is $15 for adults.

Later my wife and I drove south to NAS Imperial Beach where the helicopter squadrons on the west coast were stationed. All the helos have moved to NAS North Island, and some Navy commands from NAB Coronado have moved into the old HS-10 hangar and the HC-1/HC-3 shared hangar. The Border Patrol has taken command of the part of the base where the chow hall and enlisted barracks were located. Some familiar things were the odor of the Tijuana River which ran just south of the runway mixed with the aroma of Mexican food wafting from across the border about a mile south.

My wife and I then drove by the old boot camp at NTC on Harbor Boulevard. The barracks on the “primary side” of the boot camp are still standing but decaying. On the “advanced side” of NTC, I was surprised to see the USS Recruit (was that the name?) still standing. We practiced general quarters drills on that scale model wooden destroyer.

One last note about San Diego. NAS Miramar is now MCAS Miramar. Most all the Navy fighter squadrons moved to NAS Oceana, VA, and the top gun fighter school moved to NAS Fallon, about 50 miles east of Reno, NV.

Comments: The following obituary was published in the Glens Falls (NY)Post-Star on 6/5/2007.

James Michael O'Brien
SARATOGA SPRINGS * James Michael O'Brien, affectionately known throughout Saratoga by his many friends as "Counselor," passed away quietly on Christmas day, Dec. 25, 2006, at Saratoga Hospital at the age of 69.

Jim was born on Feb. 17, 1937, the son of James E. O'Brien and Irene Hayes-O'Brien of Granville.

He attended schools in Granville and graduated first in his class from Granville High School.

He worked summers in the O'Brien Bros. Slate Company Inc. Jim then received a four-year degree from Harvard University at Cambridge, Mass.

After graduation from Harvard, Jim enlisted in the Unites States Navy and served on the aircraft carrier Coral Sea. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Junior Grade.

Jim next went on to receive his law degree from Albany Law School in 1966. He was part of a class that included several judges (Cohen, Smith, Rogers, Seibert, Spain, Ferradino) as well as E. Stewart Jones and F. Stanton Ackerman. He was well respected for his intellect within the class and throughout his career.

He continued his naval career by joining the Naval Reserves, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander.

Jim pursued his law career joining the firm of Snyder and Grey in 1965 in Saratoga Springs. After the dissolution of that firm, Jim continued his private practice in Saratoga Springs until the present time.

He was a member of the Saratoga Springs Lions Club and was proud to be a member of Saratoga - Wilton B.P.O Elks Lodge No. 161. He looked forward to his Monday visits there after work to see his friends. He was also a member of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Saratoga Springs.

He loved golf, bridge, scrabble and checkers. He was always ready to bet a dollar or two on any sporting event. There was never a time when a friend could not stop in at the office to say hello and sit down for a chat. To know Jim was to love him. He was bright, witty, sharp and funny and always a good person.

Jim is survived by his sister, Maureen Hayes O'Brien of the Lazy RR Ranch in Patagonia, Ariz. and Granville; and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave.

Burial with military honors will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

Following the burial all are invited to a reception at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge, 1 Elk Lane.

At the request of his sister, memorial donations may be made to the Slate Valley Museum, 17 Water St., Granville, NY 12832.

Arrangements are under the direction of William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373).

Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.

I was on the captain's gig and met a lot of interesting people and visited a lot of places. The most I remember was the shipmates and their friends. We lost one a few days ago: Frank Norris. We went to boot camp together. I also served on the USS Shangri La.

How long have you been living in the Philippines? Paul Brooks, Paul Suarse and I had been in contact since all three of us flew back to CONUS. Comments: Just finished reading the book Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club that profiled carrier operations and naval air support off Vietnam. It was quite interesting but I was once again disappointed that the author did not mention any operations off Vietnam prior to 1964. That always seems to be the "First" combat cruise to the South China sea. Why does everyone seem to ignore the weeks that the Coral Sea spent cruising the coast in support of Laos and the communist aggression there during the 1960-61 cruise? We spent several weeks on DEFCON2 alert during that cruise. We were flying our aircraft 24/7 for a long time. Every day was a normal working day due to "operational commitments". We had air craft that never returned to the carrier. What happened to them? Can someone please tell a factual, complete story on exactly what went on during that nearly 10 month deployment? That was 45 years ago and the memory tends to fade but I have vivid recollections of many things that went on during that cruise - for example, being pulled out of Buckner Bay, Okinawa with little notice and leaving several hundred of our crew ashore. Anyhow, it was the most exciting time in this kids life and wouldn't trade in for anything. Hello to all my old shipmates in "Heavy Two" and "X" Division. Has anyone seen Dennis "Wooly" Woolworth from X Division?

I can assure you that the time frame you served aboard is totally irrelevant. We have guys from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Libya and other "incidents' that our ship so ably participated in. The one and primary thing we have in common is our ship. When the sea stories begin, kine as a cook striker are the same as Bob Mackey. We may have served years apart, but we served IN THE SAME GALLY. Ha Ha

Comments: HAPPY EASTER SEASON to all. I see in news that cruise ship sink off coast of Greece. I remember when we got stuck in mud coming in from a shake down cruise. It was about 8 or 9 am one morning, and we had already went under the Bay Bridge but got stuck before we could tie up at Alameda. We lost a Captain over that incident. We were not freed until about 9 pm that night. All us "brown baggers" had our blues on and ready for liberty call, but it was not to be. Sounds like they will be going after their Captain and crew as well. Hope all you Grand and Great Grandfathers get pretty easter eggs from your "lil ones" enjoy! YOU ARE A FEW YEARS LATE SINCE I'M ALREADY LOOKING AT TONKIN GULF YACHT CLUB U.S. CARRIER OPERATIONS OFF VIETNAM BY RENE J. FRANCILLON RIGHT NOW ON MY DECK THAT I ALL READY TOLD BOB ABOUT WHO ALSO HAVE THAT SAME WEBSITE TOO ON LINE. YES THE BOOK IS VERY GREAT WITH ONE BIG MISTAKE ON PAGE 91 WHERE IT SAYS THAT CAPT. GEORGE L. CASSELL WAS THE CAPTAIN WHEN WE LEFT ALAMEDA 7 DEC. 1964 WHICH IS SO VERY WRONG. CAPTAIN PIERRE N. CHARBONNET, JR. WAS THE CAPTAIN UNTIL HE WAS RELIEVED BY CAPTAIN GEORGE L. CASSELL ON 15 JANUARY 1965 THE DAY BEFORE WE LEFT HAWAII AFTER THOSE 36 DAYS THERE TO GO TO OUR VERY FIRST OVERSEAS PORT-OF-CALL MANILA WHICH NEVER HAPPENED IF YOU CAN REMEMBER. CAPTAIN CASSELL WAS PROBABLY ON THE SHIP WHEN WE LEFT ALAMEDA BUT HE WASN'T OFFICIALLY THE CAPTAIN OF THE CORAL SEA UNTIL CAPTAIN CHARBONNET WAS RELIEVED BY HIM MY VERY FIRST CHANGE OF COMMAND ABOARD THE CORAL SEA. SURE I SPENT NEARLY TEN YEARS ON HER IN TWO TOURS BUT THAT VERY FIRST WESTPAC STAYS FRESH IN MY MIND ALWAYS AND I MADE 11 CRUISES, 8 WESTPACS, 2 WORLD CRUISES AND 1 MED. DID THAT CRUISE LEAVE A VERY GOOD IMPRESSSION ON ME? IT'S LIKE A RECURRING DREAM WHEN THINGS TRIGGER CERTAIN EVENTS IT COME RIGHT BACK TO THE FRONT SO VERY VIVIDLY. THINK ABOUT THIS 23 YEARS EARLIER ON THAT VERY SAME DAY WE LEFT ALAMEDA PEARL HARBOR WAS ATTACKED BY THE JAPANESE AND EXACTLY 2 MONTHS LATER ON 7 FEBRUARY 1965 A SUNDAY THE CORAL SEA LAUNCHED IT'S VERY FIRST ATTACK ON IT'S ENEMY. IRONIC OR HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF? WELL THINK ABOUT IT FOR A WHILE AND 331 DAYS LONG WESTPAC CRUISE WHICH STILL HOLD TRUE TODAY. WE MADE HISTORY THAT CRUISE MY FRIEND SO BE PROUD YOU WERE THERE WHEN IT ALL HAPPENED. WALT THE SALT!!!!

Comments: Perhaps the webmaster has this item listed somewhere and, if not, Bob, would you please list it. The item of which I speak is a book entitled TONKIN GULF YACHT CLUB (US Carrier Operations off Vietnam) by Rene J. Francillon. It is a hardbound book copyright 1988 and out of print. The ISBN is 0-87021-696-1. If you are interested in a detailed history of the Naval Aviation War in Vietnam this is the book for you. It is a very detailed history and gives the names and dates of all US Carriers and their deployments to Vietnam waters. Also, gives the names of all the squadrons, combat losses, days on the line, and more details. There are numerous black and white photos. It would be hard to think of anything the author left out that one might want to know about Carrier Aviation and the Vietnam war. The cream on the cake, so to speak, for us Coral Sea vets is that the author wrote a monograph regarding one of the carriers and gave specifics of that carriers deployments with lots of details. Luckily for us, the author picked Coral Sea, probably because it made 7 combat cruises during the war and spent more days in the Gulf of Tonkin, Yankee Station area than any other carrier. So, I want everyone to know about this book. If you go to Amazon.com or "AddAllused and out of print book search" you will probably find a copy. It appears that copies can be had for around $40 the last I checked. Or go to your local library and ask the library to do an inter-library book search so that you can get a book loan of this title. I think it is a great history book.

For the record I went by the name of Mike instead of Moe while in VAW-11 oh so many years ago. I spent my 22nd birthday (12-22-64) on board the Ageless Warrior while on our way to the Far East and, as it happened, destiny in the way of the Vietnam War.

Comments: 4 years she was my home, #1 engine for most of it, and then AC&R. From extreme heat to the freezers. I hated it, I loved it. 2 westpacs, 60, and 70 days on line, 6 on, 6 off, great poker games. I grew up in those days. I met some of the best guys, and biggest jerks I'll ever know. I learned my trade there. I'll never know anything like Olongapo City again. I would have liked to sink her myself a few times when I was on her, but she deserved better than she got. To all who served on her you have my respect, and my grattiude, you served our country when they needed you, during conflicts that weren't ver popular. It is through us that the Coral Sea will always sail.

The result was 4 died and I was the worst of the injured. I spent almost a year in the hospital with 37% 2nd & 3rd degree burns. I would like to find any of the other survivors. My time on the grand old lady brings back so many fond memories. God bless you all. The Lord is good.
