Comments: I remember flying in from Sigonela Sicely and being dropped off on the flight deck of the Coral Sea from a Helo in preperation for the bombing of Libia April 1986 and had to start flight recovery immediately. That wouldn't normally be a problem but my squadron had been operating off the USS America and each flight deck has it's differences. I was used to the way USS America operated her deck and their was a significant difference in how the Coral Sea manuvered her aircraft. Oh well adapt and overcome I did heard a few choice words from the Air Boss for being somewhere I shouldn't have been. One thing I remember is her tall knee knockers! |

Comments: WELL TODAY IS NEARLY GONE BUT EXACTLY 45 YEARS AGO TODAY AT O800 THE USS CORAL SEA AND CAG 15 LEFT NAS ALAMEDA FOR HER FOURTH PEACETIME WESTPAC WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE THE LONGEST CRUISE OF ANY AIRCRAFT CARRIER SINCE THE KOREAN WAR AND ANY CARRIER EVER SINCE 331 DAYS. SURE IT WAS EXACTLY 23 YEARS EARLIER WHEN THE JAPANESE BOMBED PEARL HARBOR BEFORE 0800 AND THE OFFICIAL WORD OF WAR WAS PRESENTED TO US BY THE JAPANESE WHICH THREW US RIGHT INTO WORLD WAR 11 THAT SUNDAY MORNING. WE ALL SEEN THE MOVIES THEN AND NOW. WE WERE ALL FAT, DUMB AND HAPPY GOING TO WESTPAC UNBEKNOWING THAT EXACTLY 2 MONTHS LATER ON ANOTHER SUNDAY 7 FEBRUARY 1965 WE WERE GOING TO BE THROWN INTO WAR JUST LIKE THE JAPANESE THREW US INTO WORLD WAR 11 AT PEARL HARBOR BY AN ENEMY JUST AS CUNNING AND SHREWED AS THE JAPANESE KNOWN AS THE VIET CONG. I WAS AN 18 YEARS OLD YOUNG FOOL WANTING TO GO OVERSEAS TO SEE ALL THE SITES AND WOMEN BUT ENDED UP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR WE PEONS DIDN'T EVEN KNEW EXISTED ON A MAP VIETNAM WHERE WAS THAT? THE SOUTH CHINA SEA AND THE TONKIN GULF YACHT CLUB WHICH WE BECAME EXCLUSIVE MEMBERS FOR MY FIRST THREE WESTPACS ABOARD THE CORAL SEA AND ANOTHER CARRIER IN 1970 MY FIRST WORLD CRUISE TO VIETNAM AND SO AFTER 4 COMBAT CRUISES TO VIETNAM GIVES ME 528 DAYS ON THE LINE IN THE TONKIN GULF YACHT CLUB BUT BEING ON THE CORAL SEA FOR TWO TOURS AND 6 WESTPAC AND ONE WORLD CRUISE IN 1983 MY SECOND WAS THE GREATEST TOUR OF DUTIES I'VE EVER SPENT IN MY ENTIRE NAVAL CAREER OF 23 YEARS AND 11 CRUISES OF 8 WESTPACS TWO WORLD CRUISES AND ONE MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE. THIS IS ONE ANNIVERSARY I'LL NEVER FORGET EACH YEAR WHEN HISTORY IRONICALLY REPEATED ITSELF FOR THE CORAL SEA AND HER CREW WHO WERE THROWN INTO WAR JUST LIKE ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN AT PEARL HARBOR 7 DECEMBER 1941. BEING YOUNG DUMB AND FULL OF YOU KNOW WHAT AND A ONE TRACK MIND LIKE MOST SAILORS GOING OVERSEAS FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME ON A PEACETIME CRUISE HAVE YOU THINKING ABOUT ONE THING AND GOING TO WAR JUST DOESN'T COME INTO THE PICTURE AND THE WHOLE CREW GOT A BIG RUDE AWAKENING THAT CRUISE. BUT AFTER SEVEN MONTHS AND ENDING THE CRUISE WITH OUR LAST STOP IN YOKOSUKA, JAPAN AND HAVING DUTY ON THE DAY THE CAPTAIN CAME ON THE 1MC AND TOLD US WE GOT EXTENDED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME THAT EVEN HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT AND WHEN WE WERE GOING HOME SO WE ENDED UP SPENDING FOUR MORE MONTHS ON THE CRUISE FOR 331 DAYS TOTAL. I SPENT MY 19TH BIRTHDAY ON OUR 52 DAYS FIRST SEA PERIOD TO VIETNAM SO HAVING YOUR FIRST CRUISE BEING A MEMORABLE EVENT DOES HAS A TENDENCY TO STICK WITH YOU. WELL HAVE A GREAT DAY AND ALWAYS KEEP THIS GREAT SITE ALIVE AND WELL FOR ALL US FLEET SAILORS WHO SAIL THE SEVEN SEAS. WALT THE SALT |

Comments: Hello everyone. I am Larry "Pinky" Pilkinton, an ATN-3, who was attached to the USS Coral Sea from August 1965 to June 1967. The first 3 months I was serving in the galley. After that I was a part of the V-6 Cal Lab where we were in charge of all of the squadron electronics areas-test benches, harnesses and test equipment. My First Class PO was Russell Loehr, the shop leader. Others in the shop included Royal V. Bowhay-2nd Class PO, Joe Leinert-2nd Class PO, Larry Draeger-2nd Class PO, Gordon, Darveaux, Payton, and several others. We were the first squadron to return from Vietnam, after being overseas for more than 350 days. While aboard, we spent a Christmas in Hong Kong, had a shaft & all four screws replaced after hitting something during a carrier qual session, lost a mail plane over the side, had an A6 return with a big hole in the wing, spent several months in the Hunter's Point dry docks, backed into the Iwo Jima jeep carrier in San Diego's harbor, did a speed run across a glass-like ocean from San Francisco to Hawai'i, and we all watched as the Russian "Bear" bomber flew overhead, escorted by our own F-4 Phantoms. It was an exciting, but difficult time for all, but something I and many others will never forget and also cherish as a lasting memory for serving our country aboard a real warrior, the USS Coral Sea, CVA-43. Regards, Pinky |

Comments: It took a long time to get her into shape in 1955. There were many repair stops in Norfolk before leaving for the Med. During one of those I even got married. We were the sharpest and most efficient ship in the fleet at that time. From the Mediterranean cruise to our journey through the Strait of Magellan, and on to Tacoma, it was a joy and an honor to have served with so many great sailors. My closest buddy, Herm Gohlke, MM3, died in 2005. |

Comments: I'm looking for shipmates of my father's. In Jan of this year he posted the following: Looking for shipmates that served with me.I have received(in June'08) a diagnosis of Mesothelioma-in pleura of left lung. I am trying to recapture memories of time aboard and possible exposure incidences. Sad news, we know, but any help would be appreciated. If you look at our cruise book ,page 177, I am in middle pic.Row 2, FIRST on the left.(they mixed my name with Mitchell's) My father passed away on April 1st from Mesothelioma. Due to my Dad not being able to recall exact instances on board, some of the companies are going to be able to get out of compensating our mother for his death and wipe the slate clean of their part in it. If anyone remembers my Dad please contact either our Mother, Betty, at bjbard@joimail.com or myself, Shary, and my Brother Jim at jmbnavy1964@yahoo.com . Hoping to find some sort of justice for our Dad. Thank you. |

Comments: Besides the fuel in the Drinking water ,water being shut off half way through a shower, sleeping on a cot style rack, trying to store all your seabag in a locker made for school books, air conditioning problems in the berthing space where temperatures were in the 100s which was underneath the #3 catapult, Long hours on the Flight Deck, getting to chow and the main course has run out only to have the left overs. Comments: I was recently catching up on my reading in a Sea Breeze dated Nov. 64 titled, Calender Year on page 7. A calender year has 365 days in it. Each person in the Navy is given the opportunity for eight hours sleep, which totals to 122 days, leaving 243, also, personnel have eight hours for recreation, which totals up to 122 days, leaving 121 days. We also get 52 weekends off making it 78 days, leaving 43 days. The Navy gives each man 30 days leave annually, leaving 13 working days left. Out of those 13 days the Navy gives 6 legal holidays annually, which leaves 7 days, normal personnel will goof off at least 30 minutes a day, totaling 6 days, and that leaves one (1) day, and I'll be damned if your going to get that off. |

Comments: During the WestPac cruise '79-'80 During the Irianian Hostage crisis we floated around in the I.O. (Indian Ocean) aka "Camal Station" waiting for something to happen. Before it eventually did, to kill sometime and for entertainment. Someone had the bright idea to stage some exhibition karate fights between teams from the Coral Sea, a group of squids who worked out together in the forecastle and a team from the USS Nimitz. Communication with the Nimitz was sketchy at best and come fight day the Nimitz team was a no show. A fight ring was setup in the hanger bay and many of the crew gatered around to watch the show. With no opposing team to fight, the CoralSea team divided in half and fought each other instead. The rules and limitations of the matches were also sketchy and were made up as we went along. I can barely remember if we even wore any protective gloves or boots. There was only one real injury which happend early. About the first or second match on the fight card. A bout between myself and a Marine who jumped in on the event at the very last minute. Unfortunately the bout ended fairly early when the Marine ate a jumping spinning kick to the face and suffered broken nose which was purely unintentional but I have to admit, entertaining. The entire Hanger bay erupted in cheers. Anyone else recall any of the other bouts or have pics? |

Comments: ***Benefits*******A Must Read***** Im writing to all former ships crew members and airwings, in hope that we can all establish a record of our service aboard our ship relating to health issues...Today I filed with the VA in regauding to my health and one important thing that the VA wants is proof and as you know the good ole Navy never writes everything down in the log books!!!!...So Im going to start out with what I saw and experienced in hope that others can benifit from it and I hope others will follow so that they can leave a record that others can draw from. (1) Feb 1971...Hunters point naval ship yard. No 1 pumproom V4 div ...Chipping with needle guns and sanding disks....removing red lead paint in an unventalated space...dust so thick you could not see...No protective gear issued, and most of us wrapped t-shirts around our faces to breath, sometime we could find ear protectors but not always.....The same goes for the final paint of said pump room, with red lead paint......Also in the pump rooms were pipes that were cracked and degrading(maybe asbestous)....and during the cruise the bilges were always sloshing with jet fuel with little or no ventalation.... (2)Also during the overhaul in hunters point there were workers in white plastic suits removing asbestous on the same deck as the chow hall, on the port side passage...in retrospect everone walking through the halls and in that area were exposed during that time. After the Hunters point Overhaul the ship went across the bay to alameda, where a finish-up procedure was done....(3) The flight deck was coated with a jell acid to remove the non skid and the fumes were toxic in my opinion....we used that same acid to remove paint on all fuel stations on the flight deck....(4) V4 personnel were required to wash down fuel tanks(inside the tanks) with no air masks and no ventilation to clean the tanks with fire hoses.....(5) After the cruise of 71-72 the flight deck had its nonskid "Sand Blasted" off the the flight deck and the silaca sand that flew in the air was VERY Hazadous and was on 60 minutes years ago. If you or other shipmates have knowledge of situations like the ones I remember, please log them in for the "RECORD" and dont let the US Goverment denie it... we did our jobs with no complaints...so when we need help in our latter years, lets help the Goverment step up to help us....if you have knowledge of any of these situations that I have describe..please email me or if you have other dates let them be recorded so other shipmates may use them in their quest for benifits....ABF2 Dale Smith |

Comments: Just wanted to let everyone know that I have a new e-mail address. My old one has gotten invaded with spam. It's probably my own fault though. I got a pop-up that said congratulations you are our 999,999th visitor and you have won your choice of laptop computers. Well I had a son who was starting college and I thought a prayer had been answered. Boy was I wrong. For the last several months I have been getting all of these e-mails trying to sell me junk or hook me up with local "hotties" and a miriad of other things. I have not figured out how to stop all this so I created a new address. My new address is cv_43texx@yahoo.com. the old address is still active. If anyone has any information how to stop all of these unwanted e-mails send me a note at the above address. I would appreciate it greatly. Later from the Buckeye State, Texx |

I am hoping someone has a cruise book from the 79-80 westpac, 81-82 westpac or the 83 world cruise.A PDF file would do. I never bought one let alone seen what is inside them. I am also proud to say I was the senior Airman in V-1 when i departed as Jackson was a petty officer. We both came aboard at the same time my birthday! in the P.I. I've seen Paul Mason from my home town, Lester Smith early 90's ran into him at a K-MART in Denver of all places i recognized him instantly, Of course Russ my younger brother, Mike my older brother who we lost Feb of 2008 to cancer we 3 brothers all served aboard Coral Sea and for a while all at the same time. Comments: Are there any good Veteran Service Officers (VSO) out there? We think so. In fact, we have a growing directory of VSOs nominated by veterans. These VSOs have demonstrated excellence in helping veterans secure service-connected claims and increase ratings. They return phone calls too. If you need a good VSO in your area visit our web site at http://www.veteranprograms.com.
Keep up the good work on this site. As stated previously, we added it to our monthly newsletter as a resource for all veterans. Thanks! |

Still haven't found any 5" Gunners Mates from the 1950s. I did finally buy one of the Coral Sea baseball caps and wear it whenever I'm out and about. I've met a lot of shipmates from other eras of the Coral Sea plus a lot of shipmates from other carriers, and a lot of Vets in general. That ball cap has worked wonders. I even met one shipmate who was at Pearl Harbor and later served on the Coral Sea. He was as excited to meet me as I was to meet him. He was a Snipe and told me the only thing he disliked about the Coral Sea was that it was hard to get from the bilges to the Hanger Deck. He figured he would have died trying to negotiate all those ladders and hatches if he had to get out in a hurry. I told him that Gunners Mates didn't have that problem since we seldom ventured down more than 2 decks. ;) ;) |

After posting my name on this website as well as on the HC-1 website, I have only located a few people I knew on the cruises. When I went to NAS North Island as a Navy civilian in 1981, I did meet AKC Ziglinski, who was an AK3 on the 1972 cruise with HC-1, but he didn’t remember me. He must have killed too many brain cells drinking San Miguels in Olongapo City at the Rufadora; the club frequented by the helicopter squadrons. |
