Nice site, I,m searching for shipmates of my father, Cmdr Bill Seafus. He was C.O. of VA 155 and was KIA aboard Coral Sea due to a mishap on the deck while preparing to launch his A-4. That was 25Nov1967. If any of his squadron mates are out there, or any one else who knew him I'd be interested in hearing from you. Thanks!

I served aboard the Coral Sea as a member of VF-151, two cruises between 67 and 69. I was a AMH-3 working as a flight deck trouble shooter. Seems like I remember a unscheduled trip to Korea one cruise, along with the battleship U.S.S> New Jersey. Got some great slides of the two great ladies steaming together. Thanks so much for this great web site and D.T. Price,Underdog, where are you guys now? C.C.Cross

I served aboard the USS Coral Sea during her World Cruise. I was with VA-27 AS A03 AND A02.Our squadron was then attached to the USS Carl Vinson (both ends of the spectrum). Reviewing the gallery of pics, it sure makes you feel weird to see the ship being torn apart when you have spent so much time in what their making into scrap metal. Oh well! It would be great to hear from any of the ole shipmates. Ive stayed in touch with one or two but would like to hear from others as well. Later,

Greg Carter 1984 - 1989. Was a Journalist in Public Affairs Office. Worked with Brian Wood, Bob Chuzits, Jim Giusti... Worked on the "Coral Cable" ship's newspaper. Editor of the 1987-88 Cruisebook. Does anybody remember colliding with an Ecuadorian tanker in the Carribean in '85? Also, the Libyan Conflict and the crazy music video we produced for the crew and played them on WSEA, the ship's TV station. I saw the ship getting torn apart in the Philly shipyard and it hurt to see that after all the blood and sweat we shared. Take care...

Came aboard 10/76, left ll/79. Was journalist in PAO. Had fun, even remember some of it. One WesPac, 1977, a year up in Bremerton, and departed the day before another WesPac, to the IO. Most memorable time for me was early one morning watching three storm systems many miles away, one even over the horizon, during monsoon season in S China Sea. I clearly remember the orange, red, yellow, and most especially green colors of the storms, as the lightning illuminated the sky. Couldn't hear a thing, they were so far away. Amazing. A couple other memories surface: a man overboard while tied to the pier (someone fell off the gangplank into the water coming back from liberty), and us having to abandon ship while tied to the Alameda pier because a firemain broke and we flooded so much we were lisiting to port, I believe. Oh yeah, abandoning ship in Bremerton because of a bad fire during drydock. Anyone remember a RANDY MURPHY? There is a young lady in Bremerton trying to track him down, she believes he's her father. Find her letter here, you'll want to help, and she certainly deserves to know. If you remember me, please drop a line. Bruce Jones (JO2)

For anyone who knows me and knows I am a New York City Fireman I am ok. Please feel free to e-mail me to say hello. I have had to bury over 20 of my friends that I have known and worked with. Some of them I went to Jr High and High school with and knew for a very long time. I was there on that terrible day and for the following two weeks. What I saw is beyond description. Suffice to say it was a horror show. It feels strange to know there is a war going on and to not be there this time. (deployed overseas I mean )Especially since I knew so many who were killed personally. God Bless all those who are serving now at the "tip of the spear." Everybody stay safe.....George

I served on the Coral Sea from Jan. 85 to August 87. (SH3 Cahill) I was in S-3 Div. and ran the ships main store for most of my time there, and the officers store. I also took my turn in working in the laundry to ensure my fellow shipmates had clean skivies. I made a lot of friends on board and miss the times we had. We grew into a big family in S-3, and SHCM Wiggins was a great leader and there for all of us. We really kicked some butt in softball! I watched my shipmates head back to the Med. in 87, as my enlistment was up, from the bay bridge waving good bye to not only my friends, but my brothers. We all went through some rough and trying times. I knew it was going to be an adventure when my first time at sea was running into an oil tanker from Equador. The Coral Sea crawled back home to Norfolk, and got ready to kick Libya's butt. Take care shipmates.

Dear Sir, I absolutely love this site! You've done a great job in keeping the memories of the Coral Sea alive and well. I was wondering why since this is a Midway Class carrier that there are very noticable difference with all the ships - something I saw that said SCB???? What does this mean? And do you know if the Coral Sea made a visit to Sydney Australia at all? Anyways keep up the great work. Cheers, Charlie.

I served on board the Coral Sea as an "IC" Man from October of 1979 till February of 1983, during this time we were under the command of then "Captian" Richard Dunleavy. I was assigned to the bridge as my battle station (actually they put us in the navigators office directly behind the bridge) I spent many a drills talking with Captian Dunleavy and he was a great leader and a fair man !! We were stationed at "Gonzo Station" for 103 days during the Iranian Hostage Debacle. Does any one know what happened to Captian Dunleavy after he assumed cmand of Subic Bay Station ?

"R" Division between '73 and '77. Two WesPac cruises. Mayaguez, Perth, Russian Bear Flyover, Subic, Yokusaka. Served in Pipe Shop, Lightwater Shop, Carpenter Shop(Ships Locksmith), Flying Squad. Didn't have a clue about life at the time. Those were growing up years. Was good at my job, though. Made HT3 twice. First time attempt to make contact with this part of my past since leaving. Kept two cruisebooks and reminisce now and then. Thanks for the site. Anyone remember Chief Hansen? Chief Scott?

Served onboard the Lady 1979 to 1981. I was released from the brig in Seattle after going UA nine times from the Enterprise and sent to the USS Coral Sea at 18 years old. Loved my entired time onboard. My Chief RMC Belt made a bet that I would go UA sometime on the PAC. I ended up collecting on that bet. Served with some great guys. My LPO in CR was RM1 Martinez (sent orders to himself!), Section Leaders were RM1 Mcentire and RM1 Menke. RM1 Menke and I made Chief the same year. Both of these guys attended my retirement July 1998 here in San Diego. Had some great friends onboard. Terry Halvorsen, Tim Pollard, Bob Billingsley, Terry Kennedy, Richard Rassmussen, Big Mac and Little Mac. Just a great bunch of guys. I have been retired for 3 years and life is good. Been blessed for being born in the greatest country in this world. Been married for 18 years and have 7 beatiful children. Nice serving with you all and especially for having Captain Dunleavy as a skipper. Only one other skipper has come close to that caliber of a leader. Take care shipmates!!

Hello, Great site! Although I never served on her myself, I have two connections to the Coral Maru, first is 1964 as a midshipman on cruise on the USS Mullany, DD528, we were plane guard for the Coral Sea off San Francisco in terrible weather. We were taking green water over the bow, and white water over the bridge and she was conducting night flight ops! I thought those guys must be crazy! Four years later, I did my initial carquals in the F-8 on the Coral Sea. She was a great ship, nice to see such a good site on her. Tom Weinel

Wow! What a neat site! Will enjoy spending more time on the site and finding more names of some of my shipmates from March l953 to October,l956. Briefly, I was was in B Div, short time in 3-c Boiler room and transferred to engineering stores adjoining the oil shack and machinery repair. First worked for Joe G. Bush and Chief Ira Huff and BT2 Gordon Irby. Many other fine shipmates in the oil shack and machinery repair. Especially remember guys like Bill Moll, MM1 and George Pfaff, Marcel Lissee, Herbie Marshall, Francis "stiches" Steinbach Chief Katoske, and many more. I've attended several reunions and they are a great place to meet and renew some old friendships. Try it sometime! More later.

To whom it May Concern: My brother-in-law, Bob (Robert) Copelton, served onboard the USS Coral Sea as a gunner. I have his yearbook dated Mediterranean Cruise 1954. I am very proud of my brother-in-law as he is the only person in my family who served in the Navy. Every birthday, he and my sister give me someting from the USS Coral Sea. I have nightshirts, sweatshirts,T-shirts, hats and even a pin. Every Memorial Day I proudly wear my USS Coral Sea hat to my town's parade. I have met a few people also who have been on the USS Coral Sea,however none of them served with my brother-in-law Bob. He now lives in Totowa Boro, New Jersey, and has 2 children,(gown ofcourse) Bobby, and Lori. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who might have served with him. Recall when ship was taking out of drydock at Hunters Point "overnite", and she was afloat the next morning. This was at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember leaving ship in drydock one afternoon, (I was a brown-bagger) and returning the next morning and finding her afloat and ready to "do HER thing". That crisis and the Naval blockade and all now seem so distant. See ya later!

My father, Kenneth Windsor and his brother, Alton Windsor, served on her from January 1955 until, I believe, 1957. Does anyone remember either of them? My dad was so proud to have served on the "U.S.S. Coral Sea." He always talked about it. He passed away on March 26, 2001 and Alton passed away on February 11, 2000. But 'Proud' they were. My father had a license plate with USS CORAL SEA on it and my mom has it on her car to this day. If anyone has any stories about my dad or his brother, please, please, write. Thank You!!!

Served aboard from 78-82. Met alot of good people and friends. The times on board were long and hard. Sometimes they seemed endless. Anyone remember the good ol' Indian ocean record breaker of 102 days at sea. I dont ever want to go through the days again. But the memories are good in the whole part. I just wanted to let anyone that knew my dad,RUSSELL ISENBLETTER ("IKE") he has passed away.He served on the Coral Sea during Korea and I believe he was in the Med. I seem to recall he was a Mechanic/Crew Chief but I can't be sure. If anyone remembers him Please fell free to e-mail me with your memories. He went on from service on the Coral Sea to serving in the Air Force for 13 additional years. He said he couldn't handle eating any more of those damn peas, and wanted to be in port more to raise us five kids.He retired in 1968 after turning down Senoir Master Sargent, for one tour in Nam.My brother was already there and my Dad had had enough of the service after 20 years plus.I miss him now more than ever in light of 09/11/01.I am sure he would be a wealth of information and insight. Thanks to all of you that served and all that serve now as I did.

Hi again! I forgot to add some important info when I served onboard. I was part of that awsome Flying Squad from 81-84. We were the ones who ran madly to any fire call or GQ. My Gq quarters were the firefighting lockers. I met alot of good people. I was watching a movie in the photo lab when the colision occured. My locker was the furthest toward the bow. I used to fix all the doors and hatches. Remember me? Why did they spend so much money on her, then decom her 5 yrs later? See ya for now Jay

I left the "Coral Maru" in 1974 and it certainly was a bittersweet experience to see her being decommissioned and then disassembled. My captains were Paul Peck and Thomas "Buck" Rogers, OE Div. Officer LT. J.C. Oehler, Leading Chief was MCPO Hillary J. Chambers. I was on board from 3/72 to 11/74.

51 and 52 med cruises. Does anyone out there remember our anchoring out at Suda Bay Crete(it was a desolate area and I believe it was on the south coast) and having division beer parties on the beach. The ship would funish beer and sandwich material.I remember climbing up the hill to an old fort and carving my initials on the timbers. If I remember correctly the beer was Pabst Blue Ribbon. As a teen ager it did not take but a couple of beers to put me away.

I would just like to say hello to my old shipmates, I was in G-4 Division. I miss my friends and the ship herself. I would love to hear from anyone who was on board from 86-89. I hope to hear from someone who remembers me, because I cant forget any of you. I dream about her and my mates just about everyday. Well God Bless you and I will always be proud that I was on board one of the greatest ships in the fleet......

I was aboard from Oct 77 to Nov 81. I made 2 wes-pacs, both to the Persian Gulf, We were there the day of the failed rescue attempt on the hostages in Tehran. That was the only time we had a real GQ in the 4 years I called the Coral Sea home. I believe that eveything happens for a reason. From the personal tradgedies in all our lives to the loss of our ship in such a un dignified manner. To the events of Sept 11 2001. We wiil come out of this Stronger, Better and more united as one people. My ancestors have been in this country from before the revolution. We have fought in every War this country has ever fought. I was the 5th generation in the U.S Navy. My sons will be the 6th. God Bless America. Gregg.

HERE IS A CORRECTION TO RANDY KELSO STORY THE ADMIRAL ON THE FIRST VIETNAM WAR CRUISE WAS REAR ADMIRAL EDWARD C. OUTLAW COMMANDER CARRIER DIVISION ONE BORN 29 SEPTEMBER 1914 IN GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. MY FATHER WALTER HARDY, SR. WAS BORN 25 OCTOBER 1910 IN GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA AND HE KNEW HIS FAMILY AND WHERE THEY LIVED. WHEN ADMIRAL OUTLAW WAS A COMMANDER HE WAS IN COMMAND OF CARRIER AIR GROUP CVBG-FIVE WHEN THE CORAL SEA WAS COMMISSIONED 1 OCTOBER 1947 AND IT WAS SO IRONIC THAT HE WAS OUR ADMIRAL WHEN THE CORAL SEA MADE IT'S VERY FIRST AIR STRIKE AGAINST AN ENEMY 7 FEBRUARY 1965. HE WAS THE BEST ADMIRAL THAT I'VE EVER SEEN WHO DEFINITELY LOOKED OUR FOR HIS CREW FIRST. I'VE BEEN OFF LINE FOR A WHILE BUT I'M BACK TO HELP KEEP THINGS STRAIGHT FOR US CORAL SEA FLEET SAILORS. I'M IN THE SLOW PROCESS OF GETTING MY WEBSITE BACK ON LINE AND I STILL HAVE THOSE CRUISE BOOKS, PHOTOS, NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS AND THINGS TO EMAIL TO ANYONE WHO WANTS THEM. THANKS AS ALWAYS. Sept.11, 2001.....nothing will ever be the same. Nothing. Ever again. Today, after 16 years, I returned to USS Coral Sea. Back to March of 1986. Libian terrorism had finally reached the point that Ronald Reagan decided to pull the trigger. During our Med cruise, we had been at GQ twice a day, and Capt. Fergeson came over the 1MC and told us the next time it was called away, it was gonna be the real thing. And it was. What took place today reinforced in my mind many things. What has become the fate of the ship we served on is but a grim reminder that the United States has grown complacent in its overblown opinion of itself. This is still a dangerous world in which we live. Like the ideas in Washington of our elected officials who seem to believe that we no longer need to arm our military and defend the borders of America and our allies, the people of this country had better wake up to the fact that today...they need to sit their children down and explain what has happened. That is, if they themselves can understand it. Today had damn well better open some eyes. You...that think for a second that what goes on in the global arena doesn't effect you unless it disturbs that "lifestyle" of yours, that it doesn't matter unless it makes dinner late, or hikes up the price of gas for your SUV's...you better think again. To all of you that were aboard Coral Sea, not only when I was, but served long before and put in harms way as she went about her business...today made us all flinch. Every single one of us. We owe it to those much younger to explain what we, and the United States Navy were and STILL ARE about. What has happened today is confusing to them. They find it hard to comprehend that some of those video games and Hollywood movies actually came to life today. They've been told long ago that the things they see on television isn't real. The movies are make believe. Now make them comprehend how thousands of people died today and where your heart lies. Coral Sea may be a memory, but we aren't. Jon Allen

Got brother duty in 1970, he was and AG, but because the "Maru" was in WestPac I couldn't catch up with her until she returned. Served in CR Division until Jan '71. Medivaced back with Diabetes. Only took 5 months before they gave me my medical. Found it interesting that I served with a guy by the name of Ullenbruch, because I served with his brother on another ship. Loved the "Maru".

Came aboard the Coral Sea, OA Division, as AG3 in Bremerton in 1969, did 69-70 WESTPAC cruise with Capt. "CRASH" Gorslen at the helm. My brother, RM3 Victor Doepke, came aboard for brother duty in 1971 while we were in Hunters Point. Lots of great memories. Best duty I had during my career in the Navy. It was sad to see such a GREAT Lady come to such a pathetic end. Somewhere, up in the attic, I have a Curise Book for 69-70 WESTPAC, Coral Sea ashtray, Coral Sea zippo lighter, numerous Coral Sea patches, Coral Sea coasters, etc., etc., etc. Maybe this winter I'll get up there and get them out!

Served aboard Coral Sea CVB 43 from Nov. 51 till Mar of '53 in S2-C Div (cooks & bakers). "Redbeard " Pirie was skipper at the time. As far as I'm concerned he was one of the best CO's Coral Sea ever had. He truly loved his ship and his crew. I was in S2C Div till just about the time I got off of her which was after Chief Patton tried to have me "shanghaied" to V1-F Div. (plane pushers div. at that time). Instead I wound up in V2-E Div. and transferred off shortly thereafter when a billet came in for AN "P" school in Norman, OK. Hey chief, ya did me a favor. Ha-Ha The last laugh is on you, if you're still alive.
Years later at one of the reunions, O.P. Ryan vaguely recalled Patton and the incident.
I have the honor of being one of the original incorporating Officers of the USS CORAL SEA CVA 43 ASSN and proudly served with the late John F. Wilkes Jr., HTC, USN, Ret. as well as the dynamic Clarence R. Mackey, MSC,Usn, Ret. Bob is still with us and he as well as John were 2 of the most outstanding Officers of this Assn. I had the priviledge to serve with.
Needless to say, I am further blessed to have had my Assn shipmates elect me to the position of Secretary Emeritus of this Assn. Bob Mackey and I will enjoy "free " dues till we expire as well as the prestige that needless to say is carried with those titles. To my Coral Sea "family" this really is the first time I can put in writing my appreciation and heartfelt thanks for voting for passage of this position.
Sincerely,
Sal Avellino,
Secretary Emeritus

My husband Ray was a corpsman on the Coral Sea on the 1954 Mediterranean cruise. Of all the ships he served on in his 23 years of being in the Navy, the Coral Sea was the one he spoke of the most. He loved his job and the Navy and was proud to be a part of it. He passed away four years ago and I'll always remember the pride in his voice as he talked about his Navy service. Your site is a great tribute to a great ship and all who served on her. Keep up the good work.

I WAS A CREW MEMBER FROM 70-74. I WAS A QUARTERMASTER. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT AT THE AGE OF 19 I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHIPS POSITION AND WAS EXSPECTED TO BE AN EXPERT HLEMSMAN. WELL IT ALL CAME TRUE. NAVDIV BUSTED THEIR HUMPS AT SEA BUT WHEN WE WERE IN PORT WE PROBABLY HAD MORE LIBERTY THEN THE OTHER DIVISIONS. AFTER WE MINED HA PHONG HARBOUR WE TOOK OUR R&R IN HONG KONG. I HAD THE FIRST ANCHOR WATCH. LOW AND BEHOLD WHEN I GOT UP IN THE MORNING THERE WERE 3 EAST GERMAN SHIPS ANCHORED RIGHT NEXT TO US WITH VEHICLES THAT WERE INTENDED TO BE DROPPED OFF AT HA PHONG. ALSO DURING THIS R/R PERIOD IN HONG KONG I HAD THE PLEASURE OF GETTING UNDER WAY WITH THEW SKELETON CREW TO RESET THE ANCHOR. To Les and all the others...... Thanks for your reply Les! When I came on board with a Security Group Detachment in July, 1965, the flour supply was infected with an insect. In the mess hall, guys were sitting down to eat and the first thing they did was to inspect their slice of bread and if they found one or more, pinch them out and throw them aside. Sometime later, a light sprinkling of rye seed was mixed in. It was a good camouflage, because the seed was the same size as the insect. It was difficult to determine, which was which! Sometime later, the one liner, "Will the real boll weevil, please stand up?", appeared at the bottom of the front page of the daily newspaper. We had some good laughs about all of this. I later submitted it to Reader's Digest's Humor in Uniform, but it didn't fly. I'm glad it didn't. The editors knew this might cause a public outrage. The innocence and daring of my youth made me do it! Hey, I told John Reynolds last Nov. 1 at this site, the fresh baked cinnamon rolls were terrific, and I meant it. These were tough times for the Coral Maru, and yet the command poked fun at itself and tolerated this and other incidents I've read about in the guestbooks. Maybe, this good balance produced good results, and that's why the Coral Maru was a tough competitor out there among the others. Thanks for the memories!

Hello Fred Redeker, I don't have the foggiest idea what I meant by "Will the real boll weavil stand up" in the ship's daily newspaper. Who knows in what direction my deranged mind was traveling at the time. That was probably the first paper that I did after coming back from Olongapo. Or maybe it was just after Robert Scott, JO2, set my chair on fire.....God rest his soul. He died 10 years ago with lung cancer. I can remember smoking 4 packs a day doing that newspaper. I guess he inhaled all of my second hand smoke. It could have even been Alan Mutke, JO2, pulling a prank on me. He wasn't beyond that. We really had a very sneaky office staff in P.I.O. back in those days. Damn I miss those guys. I will see you all in Laughlin in October. Many laughs....ho, ho, ho Les Jackson -30- By the way Fred....do I know you? What division were you in?

To Les Jackson..... Do you remember the one liner at the bottom of the front page of the daily newspaper one day in about August 1965, which read: Will the real boll weevil please stand up? I'm going to test you. If you do, tell the thousands of shipmates out there, what it was all about. Come on, Les, tell'em. Or maybe someone else out there will beat you to it! I was happy to visit this site. I served aboard The Coral Mauru from 1982 till 1985. Many fine memories. I was first in B-5 Division working in the Oil Lab as non-designated striker. I served the rest of my time working in A-Gang in the machine shop. She was a fine ship and I'm only sorry she's gone.

I remember that when we put to sea in April 1951 for the med there was a Globemaster aircraft that went down in the north atlantic and we were diverted to aid in the search.I was a boot assistant plane captain for a VF44 F4U-5 corsair. The north sea and guarding airplanes at night on the flight deck convinced me that being a cook was the best job I could have(Prior to going to sea I had had three months of mess cook duty at Cecil Field NAAS) and I proceeded to bug the leading chief to assign me to the galley. He did. Does anyone remember the search?

Bob, I have been searching for photos of the USS Coral Sea CV-43 for along time. Now thanks to you I now have a screen saver filled with the wonderful ship. I first went aboard in Oct. 1951,and went to the 4th Division. Worked as a disc jockey on the radio station, started by Jim Clark.Left the ship in early 1955, and went to USS Kula Gulf, CVE 108. Have my Zippo lighter.A few cruise books. Lots of shipmates can be found at: http://www.classmates.com Hung out from time to time in the barber shop, remember Joe Suppa and Bob Clausen. Also my surname sake RAY FLYNN, from Massachuetts. He always stood behind me in the pay line. Got out of the Navy in June 1955. Found out that while in the service it really wasn't work. Re-enlisted and stayed until DEC. 31st 1973. The USS Coral Sea was my growing up to be an adult school. Great memories that have never left me. Thanks again for a very nostalgic site.

After graduating from OCS at Newport, RI in November 1967, and Firefighting and NBC School in Philadelphia in January 1968, I reported to NAS Alameda to await the Coral Sea's return. After a couple of months sitting in Alameda, assigned to temporary duty in the base Career Counseling Office, Then, the Pueblo crisis came along and the deployment was extended. I then received orders to fly to Japan and pick up the ship in Sasebo. The Coral Sea then steamed to a patrol station in the Sea of Japan for a month. I was initially assigned as A Division Officer. We returned to Alameda, then to Hunter's Point for yardwork. I served as EF Division (Firewatch) Officer during the yard period, then returned to A Divison when we deployed. We pulled a tour in 1968-69 that was extended to nine months, I think. After that tour, I called my detailer to see what he had in mind for me. He said destroyer duty. I requested to stay on the Coral Sea and was allowed to do so. We then went on another WestPac cruise, which included a visit to Australia. During that time I was Assistant DCA (a ridiculous title, but that sometimes happened on large ships; we had an Assistant MPA also, I think.) Because I was due for discharge in October 1970, which would come while the ship was either in the yards, or just getting out, I was offered an "early out." I took it, and left the ship in July, 1970. I had been on the Coral Sea longer than all but one officer by the time I was discharged.

I met the gang plank of CV-43 in December of 1976, and said my final good-bye in February of 1981. Being young and dumb is no excuse for some of the things we did, but we were young and dumb anyway. The good times and the tough times seem so fresh in our minds to have happened so long ago. But the memories we made then were a mold of what we were to become as men, fathers, and leaders. All those who served aboard CV-43 knew we were in the business of rediness for whatever PAC-FLEET determined was the cause of the day, and we were ready! Even though she no longer patrols the seas, guarding and protecting life and liberty, she still sails on in the memories of anyone that has ever walked her passageways or gazed at her evening wake. From the boiler rooms to the bridge, every step counted, every hand was important, and we are still important to her.

I served aboard CVA-43 from Nov.72 till Jan.75 in S-6 at first then later because they were looking for volunteers and had friends there to S-5 Div.I have memories that will never die there.Served on pump team at Repair 4 Main Locker. We had a big old HT 1st Class named Harris and was a personality ship wide.Sad to say I never truly learned an appreciation of my experiences on Coral Sea till later but it stays with me.Capt.P.A. Peck is the old man than ran the ship most of the time I was aboard and he was always cordial as I remember as we met in the passageway by the post office.I remember the LightHouse in the mess decks port side as a place for sailors with there problems went.Just the memories and smells and the always tasty bug juice too.Sure would love to get my hands on a 1973 cruise book.Help me if you can and would love to attend a Coral Sea reunion of some type also.Anybody e-mail me if you were on board 72-early 75.Made me feel very strange to know she's just cutup scrap. Thanks

I served aboard the Coral Sea (my 1st ship) 7/52-6/54 in Fox Div. Memories? Saddest: seeing it at the '90 Decom. Fondest: the ceremony of its Decom. Proudest: when that sailor sang "Proud to be an American" as the last crew left the ship. I put a yr in FTA school and the next 2 yrs on the Newport News, but the 1st ship will always be the strongest memories.

It's been a while since I thought of the men and the great times I had with my older brother and his friends from VA55 AKA The OAC. They were a great bunch. They served their country well and always had a great time. We learned alot from eachother and I treasure those memories in my heart forever. There were some men I will never forget and some I will always smile to think of. They were the best and the worst of sailors, but then aren't you all at one time or another. LOL Well the site brought back some great memories of VA Beach, Oceania and Norfolk. To all those we knew we miss you all and to those who served her May God Bless you and Protect you forever as you have done for the freedom we all share.

Did a minority cruise aboard "Endurance" MSO 435, 1954 -1957 Rated ET2. Then Enlisted in USAF, followed by OCS, then Pilot Training, and B-47 co-pilot, and C-47 Pilot. Then in 1967, airlines all over the world. Flew jet airplanes for 41 years. Now retired and into Radio Control model flying. I salute all carrier personell, espeially the pilots. Any time I can log on to a "Coral Sea" guest book I gladly do so. Looking forward to my 4th reunion this year. Was on board for the 63 cruise to Sydney. Still in touch with the girl I met there and have returned twice. Getting anxious for the Midway to open. Warren Luck AO-2 VAH-2 1961-64

I'm writing for my father-in-law, BILL OUTSON. He was a "First Class Seaman"..."Deck hand" on the Coral Sea in 1943 and 1944. He could not tell me a lot more. Mentioned 20 and 40 mm guns. He'd love to find shipmates. He stated he was on the WASP after that.

Over the years the Coral Sea has been ever present in my mind. Isn't it funny how, when we were there we couldn't wait to get off. Now we all know we left something there when we did, our hearts. My 16 year olfdaughter, Angie, found this site for me. She's heard so many stories about the ship, the men on her and the times we lived. When she would ask me where the ship was, I would jokingly say, "they make razor blades of her." It is sad to think we have lost so much history in her, but she isn't gone really. A ship's heart and soul are the men that served on her. We carry her with us wherever we go. Whatever the cruise when we served or under what circumstances, we are of one Family. We are the Coral Sea now, in our own memories we will always see the iron, rivets, penants and flight deck of a sweet mistress of the sea and remember fondly. It's hard to think of her and our many brothers that did not return with us without feeling a pain of regret, a swelling of pride and all those playboy centerfolds in the OI workshop. (WOW) Would like to hear from others in OI 68-71.

Hey all! I have a new e-mail address. I wanted to get it in the book. I have found some shipmates here and on occasion have found their e-mail has changed and they never came back to update it so they were not contacted. I hope everyone is doing just great! Hope to hear from some of you soon!

My Dad was on the USS Coral Sea...He told me some stories about it. I'll let him know about this site...I'm sure he'd be real happy to see it. His name is Stan Ayre. He was enlisted only a few years...and He's 66 right now. He probably was on during the 50's....

Served in the Cora Maru 2-51 to 9-54. V3-O division (BB Stackers). Berthed on the O2 level below the Flight Deck Crane. First berthed forward aft of the chain locker. No wonder my hearing is shot ! Mess cooked under BT1 O.P. Ryan. Worst fate in the Navy ........ Came aboard as an AA and advanced all the way to AOAN in almost 4 yrs. Figure I didn't have a blast. Broke my heart when she was scraped. Still an excellent "very detailed" model of her at the Aviation Musuem in Pensacola, FL. Never found any Shipmates from that era. ... God Bless em all All you old Goats visit us in the Goat Locker at www.goatlocker.org See you there CMAA Sam, Goat Locker CMAA .......

Very cool site! It was just what I was searching for! I am an aviation artist and I have a friend that was aboard the USS Coral Sea in the seventies. I am going to start a piece featuring a two ship of F-8's passing the ramp of the Coral Sea. Your site is very inspiring and I found the right photographic info for reference purposes. I will send you a digital image when is finished! ps - do you know any F-8 pilots from that time period?

My husband George Pizon was on the Coral Sea he was a plank onwer. He was in the Air Group VF-5B. He was a aircraft machinist mate. My husband lived long enough to see the Coral Sea decommissinon too. He surely loved the Coral Sea.I was on the Coral Sea a few times with my husband and it sure was a great ship.
