1960 - USS Coral Sea CVA-43 - Docked in Vacouver at pier CPR Pier BC. If you look at the photo you might see that some of the antennas on the top of the mast are missing. The Coral Sea had to come through First Narrows at high tide to have enough water depth. As a result, the antennas would have struck the First Narrows bridge and had to be removed for the visit.

From Warren Luck:   If you take a close look you will see that # 3 elevator is missing and is covered with nylon safety netting. We lost it off of Hawaii during ORI. I should know because we were loading special weapons in the exact spot that an A3 is parked in the photo when the elevator departed. Got our attention enough to interrupt the load !!

1960-63 - USS Coral Sea CVA-43 - Very unusual compliment of aircraft. All birds are painted in training squadron colors.

Follow up from Marc Pradignac:
The air group on board is RCVG-12 (Replacement Carrier Air Group) or RCVW-12 as it was redesignated on Dec 20, 1963. This Air Group was in charge of pilots training and transitioning on the Pacific Coast. This Air Group was probably conducting carrier qualifications or on board training off the west coast (San Francisco).

1965 - [From - Mike Brophy ]USS Coral Sea CVA-43 - These were taken in Yokosuka in Aug 1966 after we busted a screw in the Gulf of Tonkin. Bent a couple shafts also. Story aboard ship was that we had hit a whale. My folks wrote that there was a story back home that a 7th Fleet carrier had hit a Russian sub. Ever heard anything pertaining to that?

[Follow-up - Karl A. Schnack] As to the drydock, I frantically searched for the pictures we took of the driver screw. It clearly showed the fatigue cracks in the brass. I remember our Assistant Maintenance Officer, CWO4 Waldgrin, coming down to the shop and telling us what the "straight skinny" was. This was while we were still in the PI. The divers had gone over the side to survey the damage. Material failure was the verdict, no whale, no Russian sub.
