Apr 30, 1990 - A chief petty officer and an enlisted crewman from the aircraft carrier USS MIDWAY (CV-41) render hand salutes at the decommissioning ceremony for the 47 years old veteran ship. The only carrier to come close to such lengthy service was the CORAL SEA (CV-43) with just two less years service. The MIDWAY class ships were constructed late in World War II as battle carriers (CVB) with armored flight decks to withstand Kamikaze attacks. The war ended just as MIDWAY was first commissioned on 10 Sept. 1945.
