I am putting this information in this guestbook for him because my father passed away on November 3, 2001 from Pancreatic Cancer. My father was 49 years old. As a child my father had a framed picture of Coral Sea hanging up in our home, which he displayed proudly! I know he was proud to be in the US Navy and Proud to have been on the Coral Sea! God Bless all the Sailors who are in the Navy and who proudly served on the Coral Sea! Comments: I was the Air Intelligence Officer for VA-25 during the two Coral Sea combat cruises of 66-67 and 67-68. I did most of the briefings for the pilots headed to bomb North Vietnam. I remember a lot of the stories I have read and appreciate the details in them. I particularly remember the Zuni explosion and the loss of the screw. I have never heard what caused the screw loss, but remember feeling a large bump when it happened. I always thought we must have hit something...a submarine? I have never seen any details about the incident, but would love to know if someone has some information.

Comments: To MAKEYE, In 1968 I bought a teac reel to reel, amp, and four speakers, still have all of it. I used to record the radio shows on the ship, still listen to them some times, its clear and sunny on the flight deck at 70 degs. I remember some of the old gang, Nixon, helms, hrbek, Calhoun, popp, carey, rymer, clark. remember standing watches in aft. steering, manning the winches when we unrep. there is also a lot I have forgot. retired now after 38 years as a field tech for a cat dealer. retired in 2012.

I have old tapes from the years I was on the Coral Sea but it is getting very hard to find a reel to reel tape player to play them on. Were you one of the guys that used to wait to listen to my dad on the tapes he had a Finnish accent and the guys thought that was hilarious. "Sweepers, Sweepers man your brooms make a clean sweep down fore and aft. Am I the only one who remembers that?

Comments: I was on the Coral Sea from 1986-1990. I started out in G3 then moved to G5. LCDR Chuck Cole was my OHO. I Was the LPO of Ordnance Control. I also was the Ammo Accountant. AOC Roever from G4 was one of my best friends. I Mourn the Death of David Cornell AOAN G4 who was killed in action while doing his job operating a weapons elevator and a wave came over the deck causing the skid of 20MM ammo to crush him in the pit. What a loss. God bless his family and his G4 shipmates.

Comments: Enjoyed 2 Pacific tours which included Australia, Borneo, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Okinawa and Hawaii. We were coming home in October 1962 home passing the Gulf of Alaska when President Kennedy was faced with the Cuban missile crisis and we steamed down the coast preparing for war. It was an immediate shift from dreaming of seeing my girl and family in San Francisco to tense times, full speed to South America to get near Panama to be in range of Cuba.

Comments: For Illinois vets receiving disability the state of Illinois passed a property tax law in 2015. Depending on your percentage of disability you can get quite a bit knocked off your property taxes, it could even go to zero taxes. Check with you local tax assessor and/or local vet organizations. Comments: Happy New Year. I have asked this before, I'm hoping for better luck this time. I have the AFEM for Korea during the Pueblo incident. According to the ship's awards on this and other sites we were also there on Dec. 10&11, 1969. It does not show up on my DD214 and I have absolutely no memory of it....anyone else?

Comments: Made 4 cruises to Nam waters two full cruises and two partial cruises, first and last ones, would love to rewrite history and have a do-over of the good times but not possible. I have old audio tapes sent by me to family and vice versa would share them with anyone interested. One of the tapes is about the Zuni rocket incident in Oct of 1967. I was standing in the hatchway of #1 elevator right across from the 1st class mess when the rocket went off. Lucky I'm still here today to talk about it! One shipmate landed right in front of my feet still on fire when he fell. I think I helped carry him to sick bay but to this day my memory of the incident is a blur.

Comments: For those of you who served at Nas Barbers Pt in 64-65 if you search for NAS Barbers Pint Weapons Dept several Sites come up. Click on aao9.com and you will find a group photo taken on the day we had special weps training and exercise. The photo was taken in front of the trailer we had to keep the officers from getting sunburn.
