May 1986 - The U.S. Navy USS Coral Sea (CV-43) battle group underway in May 1986. Coral Sea, with assigned Carrier Air Wing 13 (CVW-13), was deployed to the Mediterreanean Sea from 1 October 1985 to 19 May 1986. The following ships, besides USS Coral Sea (CV-43) in the center, are visible (front to back): a Cimarron-class oiler (either USS Monongahela (AO-178) or USS Merrimack (AO-179)), USS Capodanno (FF-1093), USS De Wert (FFG-45), USS Biddle (CG-34), USS Jack Williams (FFG-24), probably USS Jesse L. Brown (FF-1089), and a Kilaulea-class ammunition ship.

May 1986 - During 1992 CINCPACFLT and CINCLANTFLT each announced formation of six permanent carrier battle groups, a major change from the task force/task group organizational concept of WW II. In 1992 there were 14 carriers in service, becoming 13 in 1993, and 12 by 1994. A further Fleet carrier organization change took place in 2003 when Battle Groups were redesignated Carrier Strike Groups.
